5th International Seminar on Science Education

Study programs in the field of Science Education (Science Education, Chemistry Education, Physics Education, and Biology Education), Graduate School, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) held The 5th International Seminar on Science Education with the theme "Industrial Revolution 4.0: Impacts, Challenges, and Strategies in Science Education". One of the objectives of this activity is to form an academic atmosphere for both students and lecturers, as well as provide facilities for practitioners, especially in the field of science education in conducting scientific publications. "As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first human walk on the moon, we enter what is called the fourth industrial revolution, also known as an 'intelligent' revolution. As science educators we need to do more than prepare graduates with the latest discipline-specific knowledge. We need to ensure that all young people develop various transdisciplinary skills including critical thinking, ethical understanding, interpersonal skills, flexibility, teamwork, and resilience ", explained Prof. Vaille Dawson, Ph.D. the main speaker in this seminar.

This annual activity is organized by the Department of Chemistry Education, Physics Education, Biology Education, and Science Education, Graduate School, UNY with the chair of the committee Prof. Hari Sutrisno, M.Sc (Head of the Master of Education in Chemistry).This activity was held on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 08.00 - 16.30 WIB in the 7th floor of the Imam Barnadib Building, Graduate School, UNY. Still in the seminar agenda series, four guest lecture agendas were held. Two guest lectures were held on Thursday, October 24, 2019 with Prof. Hsin-Kai Wu and Prof. Dr. Özgül Yılmaz Tüzün and two others were held on Friday, 25 October 2019 with the speaker Prof. Vaille Dawson and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd. Ali Samsudin.

The seminar was attended by 124 presenter, 7 co-author and 118 participants who came from inside and outside the UNY institutions. Presenting 4 speakers, namely Prof. Vaille Dawson from The University of Western Australia, Prof. Dr. Özgül Yılmaz Tüzün from Middle East Technical University, Prof. Hsin-Kai Wu from National Taiwan Normal University, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd. Ali Samsudin from Universiti Sains Malaysia.

This event was opened by Prof. Dr. Sutrisna Wibawa, M.Pd. as Rector of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta. In his remarks, Prof. Sutrisna conveyed his hopes that international seminar activities such as this could benefit all students of science families, especially students of Yogyakarta State University in publishing activities in the form of proceedings and journals. Furthermore, Prof. Vaille Dawson delivered the topic on "Industrial Revolution 4.0: Impact, Challenges, and Strategies in Science Education". The second speaker, Prof. Dr. Özgül Yılmaz Tüzün delivered the topic on "Interdiciplinary Science Teaching: Pedagogical, Practices, and Knowledge Regarding Socioscientific Issues". The third speaker, Prof. Hsin-Kai Wu delivered the topic on "Science Inquiry and Industrial Revolution 4.0: Data Skills and Multivariable Reasoning". As well as the fourth speaker, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd. Ali Samsudin delivered the topic on "Infusing IR 4.0 Approach into Science Education: Case of Research Using Big Data and Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Educational Testing".

The 5th ISSE event was closed by giving certificates to 14 best presenters from each room in a parallel seminar, and giving souvenirs to 6 participants who asked questions to the Speaker during the seminar.

The seminar is expected to be a means for practitioners to improve scientific publications, especially in the field of Science Education. In addition, this seminar can be a forum to obtain important information about teaching, evaluation of learning, and methods of Clump Science Education from the education experts presented. This abundant information, is expected to improve the ability of prospective educators or educators in applying it to teaching and learning activities in the classroom. The seminar is also expected to be an innovative step to develop education in Indonesia in order to prepare young generation skills in the 21st century
