Community Service: Initial Socialization of Waste Management and Ecoenzyme Production through a Circular Economy

.A warm and enthusiastic atmosphere characterized the socialization activity organized by the Yogyakarta State University Community Service (PKM) Team on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the Jatisarono Village Hall, Nanggulan, Kulon Progo. The theme of the activity was "Initial Socialization of Waste Management and Ecoenzyme Production through a Circular Economy Approach," with the primary target group being PKK (Family Welfare Movement) women and local residents. The activity was designed in three sessions, including interactive discussions on healthy lifestyles and the environment, the establishment and management training of waste banks, and training on making ecoenzymes from household waste for PKK women.

The PKM team, led by Prof. Dr. Dyah Purwaningsih, M.Si., and team members included Dr. The event was attended by Kun Sri Budiasih, Moh Irsyad Fahmi MR, M.Pd.I, lecturers from UNY, and all Master's and Bachelor's students, including Heni Kartika Indriyani S.Pd., Wiqy Mufarrihaturrahma Mustaqimal Hikam, S.Pd., and Brian Mazzada Hafidz. The event also involved partners such as the Head of the Family Welfare Movement (PKK) in Jatisarono Nanggulan Village, Ms. Uti Suryati, and the NGO Yayasan Lestari Semangat Mandiri, Mr. Agus Hartono, who strive to raise awareness and empower the community through an environmentally friendly and economically valuable circular economy approach.

The event opened with remarks from village representatives and the community service team leader, followed by a presentation on the background of the activity, which was based on environmental issues resulting from suboptimal waste management. Mapping results showed that organic waste, particularly from household kitchens, is often disposed of carelessly, causing unpleasant odors and environmental pollution. This situation is exacerbated by the lack of waste management facilities and limited public understanding of environmentally friendly processing alternatives. In response to this situation, the PKM Team introduced the concept of a circular economy, a resource management approach that emphasizes the recycling of waste into valuable products. One implementation is the processing of organic waste into ecoenzymes, a multipurpose liquid fermented from kitchen waste that offers numerous benefits for hygiene, agriculture, and health. The main topic of this meeting was delivered by Mr. Agus Hartono from the Lestari Semangat Mandiri Foundation, who interactively discussed healthy lifestyles and environments, the importance of household waste management, and presented theories about the ecoenzyme production process as a solution for organic waste management. Participants actively engaged in discussions, shared experiences, and revealed the challenges they face in managing household waste.

The main objectives of this activity include: Increasing community motivation to adopt healthy lifestyles, Encouraging circular economy-based waste management through the establishment of waste banks, Training residents' skills in utilizing organic waste into economically valuable ecoenzyme products. It is hoped that through this outreach activity, the Jatisarono Village community will begin to implement wiser and more productive waste management practices. The PKM Team is also committed to providing continued mentoring to create community-based environmental independence.
