The Chemistry Education Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Yogyakarta State University (YSU), held a Visiting Professor (VP) session with the theme "Research Instruments in Chemistry Education." The event was attended by more than 50 chemistry education students taking the Research Instruments in Chemistry Education course. The keynote speaker was Prof. Muammer Calik, Ph.D., an educator and researcher from Trabzon University (Turkey), with extensive experience in chemistry education research. His presence provided a valuable opportunity for students to learn about various important aspects of research in chemistry education, particularly regarding research instruments frequently used in education research.
During this session, Prof. Muammer delivered highly relevant and applicable material for students. One of the main topics discussed was the various types of research instruments used in chemistry education, such as questionnaires, scales, and other data collection methods. This topic is very useful in helping students understand how to design and use appropriate research instruments to ensure the quality and validity of their research. Prof. Muammer also provided examples of relevant scientific journals, discussed the instruments used in these studies, and demonstrated how these instruments influence the overall research results. This activity included group discussions involving students. In these sessions, students were given the opportunity to discuss the material presented, share their views, and develop their understanding of research instruments. Following the group discussions, students presented their findings, followed by a question-and-answer session. This session provided an opportunity for students to ask questions directly to Prof. Muammer, deepen their understanding, and obtain clarification on any points they may have not fully grasped.
Prof. Muammer also led a sharing session with doctoral students in the Chemistry Education program (S3) on how to write good and correct scientific articles. In his presentation, he explained writing techniques that comply with international academic standards, as well as how to write articles that not only meet scientific principles but are also publishable in reputable journals. Prof. Muammer emphasized the importance of thoroughness in constructing arguments, selecting appropriate references, and developing a clear and structured research methodology. On another occasion, Prof. Muammer also examined the dissertation proposal of a doctoral student in Chemistry Education, Fapriyan Wijoyo M. This proposal examination was part of a series of Visiting activities. Professor, where Prof. Muammer provided input, constructive criticism, and suggestions for the development of the student's research. Furthermore, to strengthen academic collaboration, Prof. Muammer also held discussions with one of the Chemistry Education lecturers, Prof. Dr. Antuni Wiyarsi, M.Sc., regarding upcoming research plans, which are expected to open up opportunities for further collaboration between the two parties.
